Len Lye is now recognized as one of the most important creative figures to have emerged from New Zealand. Before his death in 1980 he won an international reputation as a film-maker and a sculptor, and is also now known as an engaging and distinctive writer. Lye also made his mark as a wonderfully free and colourful personality (“the least boring person who ever existed,” as a famous Scottish poet once described him).
This is very much Len Lye’s year with the creation of the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth, New Zealand’s first major art gallery devoted to an individual artist, and with the publication of Zizz!, the best-selling book in which Lye vividly recounts the story of his own life.
Roger Horrocks is the ideal person to introduce us to Lye, as the editor of Zizz!, the artist’s one-time assistant, and his biographer.
Drinks and nibbles served.
